French Tips

First and foremost, to learn a new language, you need exposure to it.  Luckily, in Sudbury, there are many opportunities to hear French, as well as speak it.  Here are some of the ways I have introduced French into my home.

Watch French TV.  Regarde la télévision en français. Mini TFO, or just regular TFO for the older students, is a great way to hear French.  There is also VRAK, Yoopa.ca, and of course, French CBC.

Listen to French radio. Écoute la radio en français.  In Sudbury we have Le Loup FM at 98.9.  There is also CBON, French CBC at 98.1 and Espace Musique at 90.1.

Get DVDs with French tracks, or at the very least, French subtitles.  Regarde des DVDs en français. The Greater Sudbury Public Library has a large selection of DVDs, for free, and you can look up whether there is a French track.  If your local branch does not have the film you want, you can request it.  It's like online shopping, but for FREE (c'est GRATUIT).

Listen to French music. Écoute la musique française.  Once again, the library has a great selection, but you can also find French singers on You Tube, Vevo, and iTunes.  There is a free French song every week.

Download French apps. Télécharge des apps en français.  There are many games available in French, just check out the app store.

Change the settings on your phone, tablet, game console etc. to French. Change les réglages de ton téléphone ou de ta tablette.

Check out the audio options on Netflix.  Sometimes your favourite show might be dubbed into French.  Availability of French tracks changes often, so you actually have to go into a show a click on the audio options.  There are also many foreign shows, with French as the original language.

Read the French part of labelling on products.  Il y a beaucoup de mots connus sur les paquets.  There are a lot of common words translated for you on packaging.  Learn the names for food, flavours, toys, electronics etc.  Apprendre les mots pour la nourriture, les saveurs, les jouets, les électroniques etc.
